Metallographic Atlas

[Previous index] [På svenska tack]

Preface:

The purpose of this collection of metallographic micrographs was to demonstrate various phenomena occurring in metallic materials due to solidification or solid state transformation. In order not to distract the reader from the main principles, information on experimental details, such as alloy composition and magnification, was kept to a minimum.
For the same reason no attempt was made to give a broad view of the microstructures typical of various important alloy systems. Thus, most of the micrographs are arranged according to the phenomena they are supposed to illustrate. Due to my own background, many micrographs show steels and cast irons, which is unfortunate. However, it is my hope that the reader will accept that the phenomena they illustrate are more general.
The accomanying text is used to explain the purpose of each micrograph and to give some understanding of what mechanisms have operated.
The number of electron micrographs was kept to a minimum. They are mainly used here to amplify what can be seen in a light microscope. The field of electron microscopy needs its own collection of micrographs.
Most of the micrographs were produced in my own research group but some came frome other sources. In most cases they can be identified because they show a Moiré pattern. I am grateful to all who have thus contributed.
